The Gap

Instagram's most engaging feature had no built in subscription - so I built one.

In 2021, Close Friends was where the real engagement lived. Audiences treated that green circle like VIP access, but there was no way to monetize it. Instagram wouldn't launch native subscription until the following year.

I saw a product hiding inside a feature: exclusive content, a built-in delivery system, and an audience already trained to want in. The gap wasn't demand. It was infrastructure. So we built it from scratch, fully bootstrapped.

By the Numbers

$500K

Total revenue, fully bootstrapped. No investors, no paid ads.

3,000+

Subscribers enrolled in the first launch window alone.

1st

Of its kind. Live before Instagram launched native subscriptions.

The Build

Concept & Product Design.

Defined the offer from a blank page: what subscribers get, what it costs, and why it's worth it monthly. Positioned access as a membership, not a paywall, at an impulse-buy price point.

Development & Systems.

No tool existed for this, so the operations had to be invented. Built the stack connecting recurring checkout to Close Friends access: enrollment, list management, billing, and member verification.

Rollout & Launch.

Engineered the launch as an event. VIP framing, a limited enrollment window, and content the audience couldn't get anywhere else. 3,000+ members joined before enrollment closed.

Marketing & Press.

The product was the marketing. Its uniqueness, a paid subscription inside Instagram before Instagram offered one, carried the story into national publications. Organic reach did what an ad budget never could.

Management & Retention.

Ran the membership as an ongoing business: content cadence, member experience, community programming, and re-enrollment windows. The product earned its renewal every month.

Inside

Subscribers didn't just get content. They got programming.

Monthly webinars, book club zooms, guest speakers, and behind-the-scenes access kept the membership earning its renewal. Designed, produced, and managed as an ongoing product, not a one-time drop.

In the Press

A subscription living inside Instagram before the platform offered one was a first. The uniqueness carried the story into national coverage, expanding the marketing far beyond the launch itself.

Outcomes

Instagram launched native subscriptions after this model was already generating revenue.

$500K in total revenue from a product that didn't exist before we designed it.

Validated paid intimate-access content before platforms productized it.

Proof that the biggest opportunities live in the gaps platforms haven't filled yet.
